The history of Sichuan University

Sichuan University enjoys a glorious history, splendid traditions and a firm strength in operation. The former Sichuan University was one of the earliest institutes of higher education in China school, with a history dating back to the Sichuan Chinese and Western School established in 1896, which was a direct successor of Jinjiang Shuyuan and Zunjing Shuyuan, places of classical learning set up 1704 and 1875 respectively. By the eve of the formation of new China, Sichuan University had flourished as the largest national multi-disciplinary university with 6 colleges dedicated to Literature, Science, Engineering, Law, Agriculture and Teachers Training, and 25 departments. Sichuan University is one of the pioneers of modern Chinese higher education, earning a cult status for playing a prominent role in the development of modern higher education in West China and MBBS in China. After the birth of new China, Sichuan University grew into a dominant university in Literature, Historiography, Religion, Biology and Medicines, as the result of a nationwide adjustment of colleges and departments. In 1958, Sichuan gained the distinction of being the only university to be identified by the Central Government to be under the State administration and was hence, empowered to guide the other universities. The West China Medical University originated from the Huaxi Xiehe College established in 1910 by five Christian missionary groups from the UK, the USA and Canada. Immensely influential, both at home and abroad, the Huaxi Xiehe College offered disciplines ranging from Stomatology to Clinical Medicine. In 1951, Huaxi Xiehe College was taken over by the government as West China University, which was later renamed as Sichuan Medical Institute in 1953. It was listed as a key national institute in 1978. In the same year, it was again put under the leadership of the State Department of Health, and was renamed as The West China University of Medical Science in 1985. At present, Sichuan University is famed the world over in the disciplines of Stomatology, Biomedicine, Basic Medicine and Clinical Medicine. Throughout its centennial history, Sichuan University has been the cradle for numerous revolutionary changes in the field of medical science.

 

The Sichuan University Library

The Sichuan University library, founded in 1896, is the single largest university library in China by virtue of the mere size of its book collection. The library is spread out into three branches, namely, the Medical library, the Liberal Arts and Science library and the Engineering library. The library is home to a whopping collection of 48 lakh volumes of books. In addition, Sichuan University has a digital library with a massive collection of databases and numerous electronic resources. The well-equipped multimedia room in the digital library sports a warm ambience and offers an online searching facility to its users. The library has introduced over 30 domestic and foreign databases which are available through the campus network. The Library also offers a course in Information Retrieval to graduates and undergraduates. It serves more than 1.8 million users annually.

 

The Medical library is a sight to behold, with a collection of over 7 lakh volumes essentially on Medical Science. It is noted for its feature of being in accord with the 'Biology – Psychology – Social Medicine Model'. The most distinctive feature is its holdings on Dentistry, which occupies an awe inspiring position in China. The Ministry of Education and Public Health has granted the Sichuan University library the Medical Project Novelty Search Centre of China. This library is credited with playing a pivotal role in the social and economic development of China.

 

The Sichuan University Museum (SUM)

The Sichuan University museum is the oldest of its kind in China, has a history that is revered among Chinese universities and colleges and is the sole museum among the universities of higher education in China. The Sichuan University museum has in excess of 40,000 cultural relics on display as well as over 600,000 animal and plant specimens. The museum's collection, as well as work, has been lauded by international experts and scholars. The Chinese Language

Application procedure at Sichuan Medical University

Applicants are required to write to the Overseas Students Office at Sichuan University for

  • the Application Form for foreign students wishing to pursue a course of study in China

  • the Physical Examination Record for foreigners

 

These forms need to be carefully filled up and then, mailed back to the University. After the application undergoes a review and is approved by the Admissions Board, the University will send the qualified applicant a Visa Application Form (JW202 Form) and the Sichuan University Admission Notice. The applicant is eligible to apply for a student (X) visa by submitting these two documents at the Chinese Embassy or Consulate.

 

Food & Accommodation

 

  • The Overseas Students' Apartment Building at Sichuan University has a housing capacity of about 300 guests. Each room is equipped with a colour TV set, furniture, washroom, telephone and air conditioner. The University provides separate hostel facilities for boys and girls.   

  • There are Overseas Students' Dining Halls on campus in addition to a number of dining halls for Chinese students as well as the faculty. Overseas students are free to choose from the above-mentioned options. Overseas students are likely to incur an annual food cost of around US $ 750.
